When it comes to mantel design, I prefer symmetry.

Symmetry can be achieved by using two of the same objects,

or by using objects that have the same visual weight.

Texture is very important in creating an interesting mantel design.

And as Christopher Lowell suggests, “lifts and levels” help your eye travel. Achieve this look by using objects with varying heights.

Once you’ve established a basic design, you can add layers for more interest,


or keep it simple.


I’ve chosen to go with a simple summer mantel.
